Otherside of Light is an ongoing portrait series by Brandon Stirling Baker, captured on 35mm film, documenting stage designers and choreographers in public spaces—from the streets of New York to cities across the globe. In partnership with the Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU, this project has an emphasis on American lighting designers whose contributions have transformed ballet and modern dance—from New York City Ballet and Alvin Ailey to Martha Graham, José Limón, and the downtown dance scene. Though their artistry is central to the experience of dance, audiences rarely encounter the faces or voices behind the light.
